CITY OF CHARLESTON
In the aftermath of the massacre at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC, batik artist,
Leo Twiggs created a painting to honor the victims. The response was surprising. When he created two more paintings they went viral. So he decided to create a series of nine paintings entitled Requiem for Mother Emanuel.
The City of Charleston's City Gallery has dedicated the entire first floor of the gallery for those nine paintings from June 17 through July 31, 2016.
SailWind produced this short 7-minute artist commentary tribute film that is accompanying the paintings in exhibition. In the film, the artist reveals his personal journey with Mother Emanuel from tears to forgiveness to redemption.
